How much money can you make blogging is a question I get asked…a lot on one of my other blogs where I blog about making money online.

And before we go into answering that one question let me tell you a little bit more before we dive into it.

You see, when I reply to the email these people send me in almost all cases it turns out that they’re actually asking the wrong questions.

Well, it’s not actually a wrong question to ask but what they actually have in mind is a question more like this one:

How do I start a moneymaking blog of my own and how long does it take me to make money from that blog?

As both questions might end up with somehow the same answer the mindset is totally different and that’s fine as I explain the mostly in the same email.

How Much Money Can You Make Blogging?

Getting back to the original question…

It depends on a lot of factors!

Making money online with a blog is really very doable and I can’t think of one single topic that can’t make you any money online.

But you don’t want to make some dollars online (although it is a great starting point as a total beginner), no, you probably want to make some extra money as you want to cover the expenses of some bills, your mortgage or your hobby.

And that’s fine…and totally doable.

But the amount you make with your blog is not about your commitment to doing so.

It’s more about the commitment it takes to actually start a blog and attract free visitors to it. And what matters, even more, is the subject of your blog (the niche you want to commit to) and the monetization method of choice!

Want To Earn Money With A Blog? Follow These Steps!

Are you still here? Great! Then you must be serious about building a money making blog. And If you are, I’ll share with you the exact steps I follow with each and every one of my blogs.

Please don’t read the sentence above as if you needed to start with different blogs to make money online.

Contrary to that I want to tell you that it’s important that you stick to one blog at a time, and off course there are people (including myself) that manage more than one blog.

But if you start at the beginning my best advice for you would be to stick to one blog for at least a year especially if you are a student or have a (full-time) job. The spare time you have to spend can best be spent on one blog instead of dividing your spare time over a few blogs.

#1 Find A Niche

It’s best to find a niche to start a blog in. This will mean you create content on your blog for a certain group of people. This might mean that your blog isn’t for everyone and that’s totally fine!

It’s not about the number of visitors that reach your blog, later on, it’s about the small group of people the fit exactly in the group of people that your blog is for.

What Is A Niche?

A niche is a small niche within a niche. Confusing, right? Let me explain it with a short example.

Let’s say you’re passionate about Photography, a niche would be digital photography but that niche is still too big to go after. Instead, you search for a smaller niche in that niche.

Digital photography tips would be better already and better still would it be to create a blog for people digital photography tips for Iphone users.

# 2 What To Write

The next thing to do is find a set of keywords (subjects for the different articles) to write about.

What you’re looking for is keyword ideas that your target group of people is searching for online.

However not simply every keyword is good. What you’re looking for are longtail keywords.

Longtail keywords are keywords that get searched for a lot less as the bigger keyword in your niche but that are much easier to rank for.

The keywords in my example of the digital photography niche show exactly this.

Though more people are searching online for digital photography as they are searching for digital photography tips for Iphone users the latter has much less competition (other websites going after the same keyword) which makes ranking for that keyword much more doable.

Even a keyword with only 50 monthly searches online will provide you with much more visitors than those 50 a month.

Why? Because people will search for other questions you’re not targeting your article for but Google will send them over to your page when they feel you’ve got good content on that subject.

#3 Start A Blog!

Now that you have a niche and a set of great longtail keywords it’s time to start a blog.

For this, you need hosting and a domain name.

Both can be bought in a single package at Bluehost

Bluehost is a reliable party with a great and friendly helpdesk.

For less than 3 dollar a month you’ll start your own blog.

This is the price of the basic plan (no need to go for a higher priced plan as you simply don’t need it).

#4 Start Blogging (Writing Content)

After installing WordPress you are good to go and can start writing right away.

For every longtail keyword you have you write a blogpost.

Write valuable content, content that solves the problem your readers have in the best way possible. Keep writing posts and do some basic SEO (Search Engine Optimalisation) for your articles to rank at the search engines.

In this article I won’t go into SEO, but for the basics I would advice you to take a look at this article from Neil Patel and you’ll need all there is to know.

This is all you need to do for now.

Sure, there is promoting your blog on social media and all other kinds of ways to get more eyeballs towards your content.

And there are more than one way to monetize your content, but for now the best thing to do (at least for the coming 3 to 4 months) is writing awesome and valuable content that your small target audience will benefit from.

So, how much money can you make blogging? As you have seen, it all depends on the choices you make upfront and the ability to keep going.

Do the things you need to succeed, keep a strong belief that you will make it and no matter what keep going on adding valuable content.

The longer you keep at it, the more money you will make and you’ll soon see there’s no limit to the amount of money you can make with a blog.

Contact me if you need extra help like getting your Bluehost account and installing WordPress on your domain.

I realise this was a very basic article on this subject. I promise there will be more indepth content on all kinds of subjects regarding making money with a blog in the near future.

For now…Start a blog, write valuable content, keep at it and be blown away in a year from now on what you have achieved!

Who knows…maybe that too expensive, for your budget, windsurfing gear set will come in reach after all 😉
